The Green Fig Bed and Breakfast started under the name Green Fig Cottage more than 13 years ago with the Buffeljags River and the Langeberg Mountain as boundary. Historically the Attaqua Tribe occupied the area and because of its natural beauty, they called it !Xairu, meaning “beautiful” (a Place called Paradise). The earliest Dutch cattle traders translated the name to Paradise. It was established as a mission station in 1812 by the London Mission Society and later in 1875 taken over by the Algemene Sending Kerk. Till today, almost two hundred years later the locals, like their ancestors have retained a connection with the earth and sky in this fynbos-adorned and birdlife- rich region. Donkey or horse- carts frequent the streets and horses, sheep and cattle graze in the Gardens behind houses everywhere. In some sense, time has stood still at Suurbraak.

A spacious dining facility can accommodate 30 guests for breakfast, lunch or supper. The 5 double-rooms all private shower/ toilet facilities with separate stoeps that offer a beautiful view over the Buffelsjag River and/ or Langeberg Mountain Range. Two double rooms also have interlinked rooms for kiddies or elderly persons with the one room offering two single-beds and the other one single-bed respectively. The rooms are fully equipped with bedding, bathroom accessories, flatscreen TVs with open view and fast unlimited WIFI.  The TV in the dining room has full DSTV package with all the popular sport and movie -channels. Bedrooms offer privacy although it blends in with the communal garden in front and at the back and court yard with braai facility. A separate entertainment hub is available for the use of guests with an undercover braai for the cold winter nights. From past reviews, service is excellent, rates are reasonable and even less than half compared the similar facilities in surrounding towns and food is prepared and served in uniquely village style if arranged prior to visits.

There is no doubt that Suurbraak on the R324 is one of the most beautiful villages in the Western Cape. It is nestled amongst streams of running water and sheltered by giant oaks, situated only 250km from Cape Town, 20km northeast of Swellendam, 32km west of Heidelberg and 15km southwest of Barrydale.
